“Democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives”

Today we are facing challenges that are bigger than us: the climate crisis and the financial crisis. Our governments are mainly unable to cope with these new challenges. For the majority of them, they are stuck with short term decisions. They spend tax payers’ money to save failed industries.
We need to rethink our democracies

Our Occidental democracies are based on paper. Political parties are sending their program on paper. Citizens vote on paper. But paper is expensive. Paper takes time to be printed and more importantly paper are essentially a one-way communication channels.

As a result, citizens can only vote every 5 years or so. In the time in between, they have little interaction with their representatives. As our memories used to be short, they can basically do whatever except during the last 6 months before an election.

In current democracies, there are almost no interaction with citizens and with expert. Collaboration is limited.

Voting paper can’t be personalized
On top of that, paper cannot be personalized. Every single citizen, whether he is a worker or a non-worker, a youngster or an old person, get the same paper. They all have to answer the same questions. They all have to vote for the same people. And as every human, these people are good for some subjects but can’t be good for solving all the different issues we are facing as a society.

I would love that our governments ask us much more our thinking. But they can’t do it on paper. It is too expensive and they would need to spend too much time to educate the whole population to make sure they can take a good decision (look at all the debates about the European Constitution in France!).

What I want is a clever democracy. I don’t wanna be asked about what to do regarding agriculture policies (I’m not a farmer), I don’t wanna be asked about what to do regarding education at this time (I’m not a teacher, I have no kids). But, I do wanna be asked about what to do to foster entrepreneurship, about what to do make our institutions more efficient. For the rest, I trust my fellow citizens who are more directly impacted or have time to dig into the subject.

You can’t ask to everybody their thinking about everything. But this remains unthinkable in our current democracies.

It’s not about left and right wing anymore, it’s about communities

People used to gather behind this simple paradigm: you are whether a socialist (left wing) or a liberal (right wing). But this leads to useless competition and decisions based on the politic party you support instead of your real skills to fit the job as a leader.

This means that our leaders don’t have to collaborate with the best people out there to make our society work better. They have to compete, they have to be winners and make the other lose next elections.

In a Democracy 2.0, Citizens could participate in chosen topics

From parliament members to community managers
What we need is leaders that will collaborate with people expert in their field. We need leaders who won’t pretend to be able to give answers to all subjects of our society. Tomorrow’s new leaders need be closer of their communities. They need to foster the debates, be more transparent, in one word; they need to be “Community managers”.

In a Democracy 2.0, parliament members should ask as Community Managers

Democracy 1.0 relies on paper, Democracy 2.0 will use the Internet as the new paper

Today we have a new technology at hand: The Internet. For the first time in human history, we can put together a majority of citizens through a two-way communication channel. Why not using this to build a new paradigm of democracy?

It is cheap and it allows personalisation. Citizens would be able to choose in which subjects they are mostly interested. They will not be bothered with unfamiliar topics. But they will have a lot of things to say to things which would impact them directly.

This Wednesday 19th of November, Commentag introduced a brand new way to search on Twitter.

Twitter is platform where more than 3 million people post short messages about what they are doing or thinking.
It’s exactly like your status on facebook except that here most of them are totally public and anyone can follow your updates.
This frenzy ecosystem can be visualized live on the brillant TwitterVision.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we could tell what all these people are most talking about?

To do so, you can use the impressive Twitscoop. It analyzes words frequencies and gives you the hottest trends live. That’s cool.

But what if you want to know what all these people on twitter have to say about, let’s say, Obama?
Twitscoop is not gonna be of any help here.

Instead, you can do a search on search.twitter.com. A search for Obama will bring you all the tweets talking about Obama in real-time.
That’s cool!
But you’re probably not going to read all the tweets, there are too many!

Let’s go back to my first question: “What people have to say about Obama?”.
Reading the first 10 tweets of the result list will not give you any clue to answer that question.
Indeed, the 10 last persons who published a thought about Obama may not represent the topics that have been discussed lately!

That’s exactly where Tweetag stands.
Instead
of having to read everything to get a picture of a conversation,
Tweetag applies Commentag technologies to allow you to easily catch up
any discussion about a topic of interest.

Try it out by yourself!

The PageRank is the current metric used by Google to rank websites.
The higher the page rank of your website, the more chance you have to appear on the first results of a search on Google.

The page rank is an absolute value. For all viewers, wherever they are, whatever language they speak, your PageRank is the same.

The web3.0 will radically change the rules. As all content will be geotagged, content will have to be classified using a new metric: the GeoRank. GeoRank will not be an absolute value. It will always be related to the observer*.
Indeed, content that first matters to you, is content related to things which are close to you.
For example, if you search for “reviews”, you will expect to first have reviews of restaurants close to you.

* Interesting statement. This sounds more and more like quantum physics where everything is related to the observer.

Empowering local agents

Till now, your local bookshop had a hard time with Amazon-like websites. As all these books were globally available, global monsters like Amazon logically succeeded in that business. They can offer better prices and yet deliver at your home in a respectable time.

But if things are GeoRanked, when you will search for the latest Harry Potter book, you will first see places near to you when you can get your copy.
Why would you prefer that than ordering your copy via a global agent?

Speed
Search for the last Harry Potter book. First result: corner bookshop - 1 mile away. Even by feet you will get your copy faster than with an express delivery with Amazon.

Price
With the gas topping at $200/barril, it will become harder for companies like Amazon to ship on a one-to-many basis at a good economical price tag. It is just not an optimized way of distributing things.

Environment
Why would you ship a book from USA if there is copy available in your neighborhood? The environmental footprint is completely different.

Meet people
After all, we are social animals isn’t it?

PageRank will not disappear though, and Google will remain.
Every change of paradigm never totally burried the previous technology.
TV did not replace the radio, Microsoft did not replace IBM, Google did not replace Microsoft and the next Google will not burry Google neither. But it will take its place on the spot lights…

PageRank will still need to be used for all global content.
If you look for information about global topics, you’d better use Google.

Xavier Damman is a serial* entrepreneur. He founded the first participative magazine in Belgium TRIBAL.be back in 1999. He is now founding commentag.com, a tag repository for the Web of Thoughts.

* serial starts from 2 right?

With the success of Web2.0, many have tried to imagine what the web3.0 would be.

There have been many attempts. But most of them did just not satisfy me.
To me, the most interesting one is The Main Street Web, or in other words, when the Web2.0 will break the chasme and be widely used in the main street by people who don’t even notice they are using a web2.0 service. The Mobile Web will largely contribute to this situation as it will allow the rest of us to be connected without having to manipulate a clumsy computer.

This will change much more things than we could imagine now.

First: GPS
GPS will radically change the way we interact with web2.0. Whatever we will upload, a geotag will be added.
Therefore, everything will be adapted to the place we are. Facebook will show our closest friends (in terms of distance), when we will look for a review of a restaurant it will show the one just at the opposite of the street with its menu and other clients’ reviews.

It means that not only IT companies will now have to worry about their reputation on the blogosphere, but also any single main street business. Every single shop, every single restaurant.

Second: Interface
You don’t write a text with a mobile phone as you do on a computer with a full keyboard.
The iPhone doesn’t even have a keyboard!

So the whole interface will have to be reengineerd.
Which makes me think that on the Web3.0 you will not search for content anymore, but you will browse for content.
The same way that on the iPhone you don’t search for a song, you flip through your albums.
You will not write posts on your blog on your mobile, you will share your thoughts.
The web3.0 could also be called The Web of Thoughts.

What will rule web3.0?
Till now, people where only connected through a Desktop computer.
They were confortably seated. They had a goal when opening their browser. They knew they are looking for …… (insert here your keywords).
And Google was the best player to search among a huge source of information where it does not matter either you search for reviews or critics because on millions of pages, someone would have use the keyword you are looking for.

On the Web3.0, people will be mostly connected through a mobile device they always wear. People are not seated, people do not have time, and most of the time people do not have something to search for.
Instead, people will have a look to their mobile device to see if there are some information about the place they are. As they don’t know in advance what kind of information other have left in that place, a google page with “type here what are you looking for” is pointless.
In the contrary, a tagcloud to browse to the different types of information that place has would be much more efficient.

The Google of the Web3.0 will be a Tag repository.
It would be like the file system of your hard-drive. It will remember for every piece of information metadata (tags) to allow access to it when you need it.
In the desktop era (Microsoft era), it was all about a tree (one tree applied to many documents => one-to-many). It worked well because you were mostly the only one who needed to access the information on your computer.
In the web era (Google era), it is a many-to-many paradigm (search). Here many many persons need to access the information and all these persons want to access it their way. So a one-to-many tree paradigm does not work here.
In the web3.0 era, what will shape your need of information is your localisation. So a global search like on Google will not work. A Google search with localisation? Would work only if you know in advance what you are looking for. And if you type “review” because you are in a restaurant it will not work because reviews would not have the word “review” explicitely written on.
Google is brillant to search among a huge amount of website. But the Web3.0 will have to crawl much smaller bunch of data because these data are localisation relative.

So the Google of the Web3.0 would be a tag repository which will remember everything that has been said in that particular place and tag it appropriately.

Example:
That repository will remember that in that place (for ex. London, in the city at the Japanese Canteen) you have sent a review of their Chicken Teriyaki.
So that a new person going to that place and opening his portal page will see that in this place there are mostly reviews. He could Zoom on this tag and get the reviews.
If that person goes out and walk a bit towards St-Paul church, the tagcloud will then show new tags like “pictures” and “history” while proportionaly reducing the size of “review”.
The interface would be fully localisation aware and would not ask you to enter any text.
To achieve that, Web Semantic will have a great role to play to classify every new content with tags. Because when you will tweet “I love this chicken teriyaki”, you are not explicitely writting “review”.

All of this make me thing about a theory which says that the human memory cannot fit into our brain (in fact, where our memory is located is still an open question among the scientific community). Some information would be stored in our brain while other would be kept on objects (and other on a upper cloud that we all share and to which we can connect sometimes while sleeping or meditating. Which explains why certain person - mediums - can know your history without knowing you).
That’s the reason why sometimes when you see something it remembers you a lot of souvenirs.
Web3.0 is all about that. Is all about keeping souvenirs of what happened in a particular place.

J’etais tombe il y a qq temps sur un nouveau concept Web2.0 applique au monde reel. Il s’agit d’un site d’echanges de livres
http://whatsonmybookshelf.com/about.php

I used to rely on GPRS with my O2 pay and go card on my iPhone. It’s
£7.5 a month for unlimited data but the speed is not that great. Just
enough for basic uses like twitter, google reader and alike. Even
Google Maps is usable but nothing outstanding.

Well, for April I wanted to try the service of The Cloud. £6.99 for
one month of unlimited data if you appear to be lucky enough to catch
one of their hotspot.
I work in the city. Probably one of the highest concentration of
potential customer for them. Here there are more blackberries than
trees.
Most of the time though my iPhone can’t connect to the hotspot. When
it does it eventually won’t get a proper ip address from their dhcp
server.
Let’s say that at the end of the week I could manage to check my
emails once.

Today I’m in Waterloo station. Good signal here and I can connect. But
oh surprise it is now asking me or my username and password.
I enter it and it keeps on saying my credentials are incorrect (I’ve
double checked with the confirmation email I received whe subscribing
to the service on the 27th of March 2008).

All in all, it is definitely not worth it. For £3 pounds more you
should better go for a USB dongle on 3G (btw can’t wait for a 3G
iPhone).
Or if you still need to rely on wifi hotspots I would suggest you to
have a loot at open bt.
T mobile looks to be great only if you happen to spend a lot of time
in starbucks coffees

I love it.
This is all in a web2.0 fashion where power is shifted to individuals.

Nowadays you should better pay attention to your reputation because
anyone could make a dent to it!

And I think it is a great trend because before companies would only
respect very high profile clients or media representatives. .
And I know what I’m talking about because I used to use the privilege
of owning a media (distributed in 30k copies in Belgium). Strangely
enough, most of client services were taking a special care of us.
Now they will have to take care of everybody. That’s much more fair.

In those times of general awareness sour ecological issues, how come
can human beings still consider making business by transporting water
from France for being drunk in Tokyo?
This is total non sense and for me this very example illustrate
perfectly the whole problem of our society.
We cannot continue letting big corporations do what they want. They
are not serving interests of our society anymore and had became with
the time parasites.
This is a world disease and we need to cure it.
